The participation of Peruvian women in the field of patents has increased in recent years, demonstrating their growing influence in the country’s science and technology sectors. Although a gender gap with male predominance still exists, efforts are being made to encourage the involvement of women in innovation and intellectual property.
The report “The Peruvian Woman and Patents” (Indecopi 2024) analyzes the participation of Peruvian women in the patent system between 2019 and 2023. Some key findings include:
- The number of Peruvian women inventors increased by 25% during the period, rising from 120 in 2019 to 150 in 2023.
- The sectors with the highest female participation in patents are chemistry (35%), pharmaceuticals (25%), and biotechnology (20%).
- Universities and research centers lead in the participation of women inventors, accounting for 60% of the total.
- Gender gaps persist, with only 30% of patents granted to women in 2023.
- The report highlights the importance of creating support networks and mentorship opportunities for women inventors, which could enhance their visibility and encourage greater participation in innovation.
The report concludes that while there has been progress, there is still work to be done to close gender gaps in intellectual property in Peru and fully harness female talent in science and technology.
