The Madrid System entered into force in Colombia on August 29, 2012 and has proven to be an important filing tool for international companies. For 2021, we have gathered and analyzed relevant information on the trademark filing behavior via the Madrid System for Colombia.

As shown in the following table, from the total granted trademarks in Colombia, 19% were filed through the Madrid System (7062) and 81% were filed with the Colombian Trademark Office directly (30621). If we compare it with 2019 numbers, there was a slight decrease in granted trademarks via The Madrid System (23% vs 19%). We did not take numbers from 2020 due to the pandemic situation; moreover, comparing 2019 with 2021 might not reflect normal statistical behavior due to the complexity of the pandemic.

Regarding frequency of designations, the United States of America, as the origin country, has designated Colombia more often, following China with 14.33% and Germany with 7.83% out of a total of 8 481 designations for Colombia in 2021. Spain and The United Kingdom complete the top 5 country applicants.

Regarding trademark registrations in Colombia for 2021, we see that The United States of America is at the top of the chart with 1367 registrations, followed by China with 827 registrations. Germany, Spain and France, complete the chart with 385, 318 and 276 trademark registrations, respectively.

On the other note, the following chart shows that classes 9 and 42 have been assigned most of the time in the Colombian registrations for 2021. Thus, apparatus and instruments for scientific or research purposes, audiovisual and information technology equipment, as well as safety and life-saving equipment and services provided by persons in relation to the theoretical and practical aspects of complex fields of activities, respectively, are important industries for many international brands. The top five Nice class chart closes with classes 35[1], 5[2] and 41[3]. Holders for trademarks that distinguish services related to management, marketing, administration; pharmaceutical products; and services related to education, entertainment and cultural activities see that Colombia is an important target for their businesses.

The following chart complements the information shown in the previous graphic. Apple Inc., has registered their trademarks mainly in classes 5, 9, 35, 41 and 42; Euro Games Technologies Ltd., a leading provider of gaming casino equipment from Bulgary, has registered their trademarks mainly in classes 9 and 42. Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. from China has a strong presence in classes 9 and 35.

Finally, the Top 5 Holder company chart via The Madrid System, is completed with Honor Device Co., Ltd., a leading global provider of smart devices from China and Gobrands, Inc., dba Gopuff, an American consumer goods and food online delivery company, that have most of their trademarks registered in classes 9, 35, 7 and 9,42 and 35, respectively.
